Session #16 - 15.45 - 16.45

1 - Enabling and supporting internships in pandemic times - Gareth Lewis and Liyan Tang (Cov Uni Lon)

Abstract: This presentation demonstrates how academic support has been provided to students taking up virtual internships during pandemic times, using M123LON Extended Professional Practice as an example

2- Being Brilliant – Event for final year students: Supporting future talent now - Jackie Whitehouse (CU Group)

Abstract: Over 450 students were eligible for progression, onto either post-graduate study and/or employment following successful completion of their studies at CU Coventry in April/May 2020. The previous graduate ‘Expo’ was enjoyed and participation levels were good and but feedback highlighted the need to provide more activities to support both professional and personal development and learning community engagement. Sitting behind the event was the NSS survey, which opened earlier that week. The event brought together all students in the final year, for a variety of innovative activities supporting their imminent progression onwards.

3 - Problem Based Learning: The problem of Professional Experience - Vicky Barclay (HLS)

Abstract: Problem Based Learning (PBL) uses problem solving as a way of constructing knowledge and learning from practical application. Enquiry based learning is a student led form of PBL which has been used to create a professional experience opportunity for students on the extended masters courses within PSBS. Combining an enquiry based learning project with employability skills provides a perfect opportunity to create a meaningful, interesting, and student-centred professional experience opportunity. This presentation explains the PBL approach and the professional experience project completed by students in 2019; with top tips for setting up a similar project.

4 - The Museum of Curiosities - Stephen Dawkins (FAH)

Abstract: Cabinets of Curiosities were, from the 16th century onwards in wealthy circles, a place where items that fascinated the owner of the cabinet were stored for viewing by visitors. They often contained wildly disparate items. This session will use the idea of the Cabinet of Curiosities to propose a whole-semester model of connected, online teaching that enables students with minimal technology to create their own museum of curiosities. The model includes activities around collection, curation and creation; exhibition; reflection and application to the assessed modular coursework. Although most suitable for creative courses, it is applicable to a wider range of courses.
