What do we mean by ‘disadvantaged’ students?
From September 2020, all institutions that deliver higher education in return for higher level tuition fees must have an approved and published Access and Participation Plan (APP) in place, setting out the university’s plan for supporting disadvantaged students across the student lifecycle. The university is introducing a whole institution approach. Everyone has a part to play. But what do we mean by ‘disadvantaged’ students? Join the session to gain an understanding of the policy context before hearing from colleagues in both academic and professional services about approaches they are taking to help secure better outcomes for disadvantaged students.
Dr Leanne De Main will talk about an inspiring partnership approach between the Faculty of Business and Law and a sixth form college in the borough of Nuneaton and Bedworth, an area of high deprivation with traditionally poor KS4 attainment and a low progression rate to higher education.
Euan McCall and André Lammy from the Talent Team will discuss some of the barriers faced by disadvantaged students in accessing international placements and how they are supporting students into the graduate job market.
The session will conclude with a Q+A opportunity for comments and questions from the wider audience.
